Mazama Guest Cabin

The Mazama Cabin is located at the end of a beautiful meadow in the Methow Valley, on the east slope of the North Cascades Mountains in Washington state. The 1500 SF cabin is a superb place for a weekend get-a-way, with a garage below and compact living space above. The roof is “lifted” by a continuous band of clerestory windows, and the upstairs living space has a large glass wall facing a beautiful view of the mountain face known locally as Goat Wall. The project is characterized by sustainable cedar siding and
recycled metal roofing; the walls and roof have 40% higher insulation values than typical construction.

The cabin will become a guest house when the main house is completed in late 2012.

5 Common Garage Door Problems

Homeowners rely on their garage door to open smoothly and close securely each and every time they use it. These heavy doors cause problems, however, if they fail at their job. Five of the most common garage door problems do not require a call to an expensive professional. Learn to fix them at home and keep your house and cars secure.

1. Garage Door Sticks Open or Closed
   Sticking garage doors can be caused by a few issues. If you have a remote garage opener, check batteries, sensors and switches first. If you open the garage door manually, check for obstructions in the wheel track first.Different weather conditions and temperatures can affect the lubricant. Make sure all the cables and springs that hold them are even length and have the same springiness from side to side.

   The easiest way to solve and unevenly opening garage door is by removing an obstruction or debris in the tracks where the wheels run.    A falling garage door can pose a great risk of injury to people who are opening or closing it. This problem is caused by broken cables or overly loose springs. With the door in the closed position, carefully examine all the apparatus to determine what the problem is. Do not replace springs or cables on your own; instead consult a professional garage door repair man. There is several safety hazards related to replacing garage door springs without the proper equipment or knowledge.
5. Remote Control Door Opener Fails to Work
   After checking the batteries and switches to make sure the device is powered up, the garage door still might have problems opening or closing correctly. If none of the above solutions helps – checking cables and clearing the tracks – you may have to either replace the garage opener motor or sensors.

Not only did the size of one- and two-car garages grow to accommodate the heftier vehicles they had to house, but the number of bays in garages increased from one to two to three, and even more. It reached a point where the typical garage in a new housing development had the same square footage as the typical new house of a few years earlier.

Rehab Diary: From Garage to Tiny Cottage in LA, on a Budget

Fourteen years ago when Annette Gutierrez and her husband, Gustavo, bought their 1908 Craftsman house in Hollywood, it badly needed repairs. Or more. "Everyone urged us to tear the whole thing down," remembers Gutierrez, who owns the LA store Potted. Instead, they renovated the house. Next they added a pool and hot tub. And then, finally, their attention turned to . . . the 100-year-old garage.

"We realized the garage would be much better if it were a pool house. Or in-law space," says Gutierrez.

Despite a tight budget that limited construction costs to about $175 per square foot, they wanted the cottage to be a fully functioning living space, with a kitchen, bedroom, and full bath.  "And we wanted it to be private so that someday—in our golden years—we might use it as our LA pad while we travel the world and rent out the main house," says Gutierrez.

With Some Elbow Grease, Garages Become Stylish Small Spaces

For some time, people have been trying to eek some rent out of an apartment over the garage, but those spaces were rarely fit for glossy shelter-mag stardom. In the past few years, with small-space living hip again thanks to dedicated sites like Apartment Therapy's Re-Nest, design-minded folks with some extra space have produced some stunning renovations of otherwise forgotten structures. Take this 1908 carriage house/pigeon coop in Oakland, Calif. It must have taken some serious vision to get past the putrid yellow color, unhinged door, and chicken wire window, but architect Christi Azevedo enlisted a friend—and future renter—to convert the former bird's nest in the attic into a stylish single's 360-square-foot crash pad. They did such a snazzy job with the place that San Francisco-based arbiter of taste Dwell stopped by to check out the final product.

I was keeping three bikes in the house. Wife finally said, "enough of that, the bitches gotta go outside!". OK... I'd been pushing my luck anyway. And no room to work on anything either. Not to mention the gas and oil smell in the house.

I built a 16' X 20' shed using plans that I came up with myself. Turned out pretty well I think.

2X8's on 12" centers for the floor. You could park a car in this thing and not have the floor move.

Took a little over a year of working weekends and after work to get it mostly finished. Hell, even the wife hopped in and bent a few nails with me! Fun project, now that it's mostly over.
