Next generation of manufacturing takes on 50-year-old icon
Techmer PM showcases 3D printed Shelby Cobra during visit from President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in Clinton, Tennnessee.
ORNL reveals 3D printed Shelby Cobra at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, January 12-15. This "laboratory on wheels" honors the Shelby Cobra design, celebrating the 50th anniversary of this model and the only vehicle to be voted a national monument.
The Shelby was printed at the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL using the BAAM (Big Area Additive Manufacturing) machine and is intended as a “plug-n-play” laboratory on wheels. The Shelby was printed using 20% carbon fiber reinforced ABS material and has a Class A surface finish. The design allows integrated components to be tested and enhanced in real time, improving the use of sustainable, digital manufacturing solutions in the automotive industry.
"...besides being a cool car, it’s a great example of how a hub like this operates." —President Obama
The ORNL booth at NAIAS highlighted additional research and development activities in manufacturing and vehicle technologies including displays on energy absorption, composite tooling, printed power electronics and connected vehicles.
